How is Sandboxie different than my standard Virus protection?

Standard virus protection works by identifying files that are listed in a database and then blocking or removing them from your system. The innate weakness with this layer of protection is that it is reliant on the known virus database to identify new threats. When a new virus is created your antivirus program must update its database to effectively protect you. If you encounter a threat before your antivirus is ready to identify and defeat it, you can still become infected.

If you are downloading a known file you will be prompted to pull that data out of the vault and onto your actual computer. Viruses and other stealth attacks stay locked in this secure zone and get wiped out when your session closes.

Do I still need traditional anti-virus software?

You will still need a good virus protection solution on your computer to protect against the traditional viral infections that can be spread by using flash drives, or moving email attachments or infected work files out of your Sandbox.
